In a new interview with Phoebe Bridgers for Interview magazine, singer Olivia Rodrigo discussed lessons learned from the media frenzy surrounding her hit single "Drivers License." She said the song's release and subsequent speculation about its lyrical subjects was "baptism by fire" and made her feel "ill-equipped" to handle the attention.

Rodrigo now feels a "responsibility" to give people a heads up if she writes songs about them, wanting to avoid similar drama. She tries not to overthink the "social implications" during the writing process itself.

The "Drivers License" lyrics were heavily speculated to be about a love triangle between Rodrigo, her rumored ex Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter. This resulted in intense media scrutiny and online criticism toward all three artists.

Bassett and Carpenter later released music that implied they were affected by the situation. Bassett has been open about the toll it took on his health.

Rodrigo told Bridgers that one of the new songs on her album is about how her life changed overnight thanks to the "Drivers License" frenzy. Though cathartic, it was difficult for her to revisit that time period.

Overall, Rodrigo has learned from that first brush with mega-fame and now feels more responsibility to give people a heads up about songs written about them. But she tries not to let that stifle her creative process.
