The woman who portrays Whitney Dean on EastEnders, Shona McGarty, has addressed speculation that she is engaged after publicly announcing her new romantic relationship.

Last September, McGarty revealed on Instagram that she is dating an Irish musician named David Bracken. Though she referred to him as "my whole world" and was seen wearing a ring suggesting marriage, the actress has denied they are engaged. Out of respect for Bracken's preference for privacy, McGarty did not provide many details, simply telling The Sun "We're not engaged, no."

She added "I'm not going to talk about David, bless him, because he doesn't like being out there too much. But yes, I will say that I'm very happy in my personal life."

Unfortunately, the character McGarty plays, Whitney, is not having the same luck with relationships. Over her 16 years on the show's set in the fictional EastEnders neighbourhood, Whitney has faced numerous romantic heartbreaks.

In recent episodes, Whitney and her partner Zack Hudson have struggled as Whitney prioritised a vulnerable schoolgirl named Britney Wainwright despite being heavily pregnant herself. Zack was then shown cheating on Whitney with her best friend Lauren Branning.

McGarty's portrayal of Whitney will soon come to a temporary end as the actress plans to leave the show to pursue new opportunities before she feels she is "too old." She explained the difficult decision, saying "It was a really difficult decision, because it's all I've ever known...But I had to put on my big girl pants and be quite brave, because life is so short, and you feel that more and more as you get older."
